Chopin's Silk Notes

Fryderyk Chopin paid much attention to his appearance and costume. He also liked to surround himself with beautiful silk objects. Some of his accessories, such as his pocket calendar from 1834, bound in grass-coloured silk, or the small silk envelope in which he kept his beloved’s hair, have
survived to this day.

There is no doubt that the artist appreciated the exceptional nature of this noble material, and even bestowed it on loved ones. ‘Chopin sent his mother a beautiful silk cloth for a formal dress.’* In his personal correspondence, addressed in 1844 to Georges Sand,** we read: ‘Your dress is of black Levantine*** – of the best quality. I chose it myself according to your instructions [...]. The material is very beautiful, modest, but in good taste. I think that You will be pleased with it.’
